“An Eccentric Life” Uchouten Kazoku 2 Review and Recommendations

“A fun thing is a good thing.”

Back again are those fool-blooded Tanuki of the Shimogamo family, and the story of their lives. This season brought back basically all of the characters from the first, as it continued the story of the relationship between the Tanuki and the Tengu’s. This was all brought forward mainly through the eyes of one, Yasaburou, as he continues his foolish journey of life to have fun.

This season expanded more on the story and the ongoing relationship between Tengus and Tanuki. With a further explanation and basic demonstration of different customs within their cultures, it brought more depth to the story this season, as we understand more about how Tanuki society operates whilst also trying to deal with the Tengus. This is all brought about through the characters, the dialogue and their interactions. These all lead to a fluid advancing story line moving from one plot point to the next, from episode to episode, providing both progression and a satisfying understanding of everything in a whole.

With an advancing story line there was a main focus on having both time for drama and comedy. Whilst keeping the drama, as dramatic as it possibly can be for this anime, the comedy is the overall background support for the entire series, as it showed. With dramatic scenes, being possibly drawn in comedic ways, combined with the colorful use of certain animations, it provided to be what it set out be, a fool-blooded production.

OP/ED: The OP and the ED both maintained their consistency from the 1st season, with both milktub (OP) and fhana (ED) returning to reprise their respective roles. The tunes of the OP & ED also were similar to those in the 1st providing more of an rock based electronic start, and a melodic like calming end. When it came down to the animations, both the OP & ED matched their tunes with the OP mainly focusing on the family and many different characters in the anime, whilst the ED focused on the developing relationship between Yasaburou and Benten.

Uchouten Kazoku 2 Was it Good?

There’s not much to say about everything is in this season. It seemed like a bunch of progress was made in the story line (which is always good), with all other elements within the anime remaining quite average. It provided to be a solid season of anime, with it appealing to those who have a general interest in it (it’s not for everyone).

Recommendations: It’s hard to say where Uchouten Kazoku 2 fits as a whole when compared to other anime series. At times it tries to evoke that dramatic sense, but will always follow this up in some comedic tone in a way. The easiest way is to find other anime who also try to fit this balance well, thus I recommend the following:

  • Gin no Saji
  • Kyoukaisenjou no Horizon
  • Durarara!!!

  1. I really enjoyed this second season. My main complaint would be it felt kind of like a mirror image of season one and the ending felt a bit rushed. Still, it was a lot of fun revisiting these characters during this season.
