“Muscle Man” Masamune-kun no Revenge Review and Recommendations

“Fate continues to blow its icy cold breath at me without end.”

Being rejected is tough and it is said what you do afterwards is what defines you as a person. Masamune-kun no Revenge explores a path filled with the trauma or torture of its protagonist Makabe Masamune, where he is at the reigns of this story, as his journey to take revenge and humiliate his childhood Adagaki Aki comes about.

Revenge can be seen as a thought-out dramatic tale, however Masamune-kun no Revenge takes a different path making it more comical and about discovery. Slotting into the RomCom genre, it exuberates a cast full of different characters, which either help or try to stop Masamune’s plot or desire to get revenge. A majority of the time the characters spend most of the time in a comical manner, with small increments in advancing the revenge plot. It’s lighthearted where it’s suppose to be, never really getting dark and offers a more unique tale to then just a dark revenge story.

When it came down to other factors such as animation and sound, it actually done quite well in keeping the more upright and fun atmosphere. The animations were filled with a bunch of different tones and colors to define the right scene, despite how comical they may be. This being combined with a great soundtrack in which provided its quirky musical backgrounds at time to fill in where it was time for comedy and when it was time for something a bit more serious.

OP/ED: The OP/ED probably were the strongest points when it came to music, choosing to stronger female vocal leads for singers (especially ChouChou) allowed for a strong start and end. This being mixed in with pretty and colorful animations with its characters, really matched what the anime was really about.

Masamune-kun no Revenge Was it Good?

In the end Masamune-kun no Revenge was a decent RomCom in a genre filled with lots of anime. Taking a more unique spin on a revenge tale allowed it to be an easy watch where you never really have to think, or take it too seriously. Variety was key here, from its cast of characters, to its animations and its soundtrack it provided a lot of it where it keeps you poised enough to keep watching.

Recommendations: There aren’t many anime out there which offer a more light-hearted revenge tale, however there are many different anime which fall under the RomCom genre, with its characters going to school and slowly developing relationships whilst having fun with each other, thus I recommend the following:

  • Kaichou wa Maid-sama
  • Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru
  • Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru!
