Best of Anime 2016: Slice of Life

The slice of life genre is one that may have conflicting views. It depends on the viewers life themselves, whether their own life be really hectic and fast, or something more simple and slow, where they may be use to one but not the other. When it comes to slice of life in anime, a majority of the shows revolve around its comedic value, offering more simpler lives as opposed to the other. Though, it may not be without drama, as drama does occur daily, where it then creates a different atmosphere for that anime. This year in anime gave us a bunch of slice of life, when it came down to it there were a lot of shows either based around school or work. Exploring these aspects is a common theme in anime, and it was nice to see both variations be so prolific, as they apply to almost anyone. With that being said:

Deirii Raifu’s Pick:

Nijiiro Days – ‘Sweet Youth’

“No matter how far apart we are, you see- our desires will remain as one”

2 3

Nijiiro Days takes the top spot this year for slice of life anime. With the whole anime mainly focusing on the relationships of the 4 male characters and their female counterparts, it just basically summed up what adolescence in high school is. Wading through relationships and trying to make the best of what you have, it was fun watching it all. With all of the different antics leading to laughter or the more serious conversations about first loves and feelings, it was all there, a nice slice of high school.
