“Memory Loss” Lostorage incited WIXOSS Review and Recommendations

“The darkness won’t end. As long as there are disgusting creatures that are no more than bags stuffed with memories and greed, the battles will begin again. They’ll struggle, suffer, scream, despair and I will watch them and laugh.”

Based off a trading card game (TCG) called WIXOSS, which was simultaneously released at the same time as the WIXOSS anime franchise, Lostorage incited WIXOSS is the 3rd anime in the series portraying the card game. The whole premise revolves around 2 characters being, Homura Suzuko and Morikawa Chinatsu, being childhood friends, separating and then meeting again, but being changed due to the experiences they’ve had.

Tying in a card game into the real world may seem like a difficult thing to do but J.C Staff did a fine job in trying to meld the 2 together. Rather than all fun and games, it takes the route of memories and the value of them as its bargaining chip for winning and losing. When winning 5 coins you can create and remove memories, but when you lose all five coins you basically cease to exist (like getting banished to the shadow realm). All in all it created a nice premise, more pertaining to the darker theme as opposed to a brighter concept.

It was interesting enough to see how the card game worked, however there wasn’t a great amount of detailed in doing so. This kept it quite more on the watching side, rather than the learning side which was nice to see. There are moments in which it does get you to entice you into learning more, however at its face with all of the pretty animations flying around during battles, it serves a good purpose as a advert for the TCG.

OP/ED: Both the OP and ED had somewhat of a pop-based rhythm towards them. this provided the right amount of energy to start and end the episodes. In regards to the animation, there was an underlying darker vibe which matched with the story of the anime well.

Lostorage incited WIXOSS Was it Good?

For a trading card game based anime, it does its job, enticing enough to find out more about the game as an advertisement, whilst also keeping the watcher entertained just for the fun of it. With a more darker story it allows itself to be taken more seriously when compared to just playing a card game with con consequences.

Recommendations: There are many different card game based anime out there so just pick one of those and you will get a generally vibe towards the genre as whole, thus I recommend the following:

  • Yu-gi-oh!
  • Bakugan Brawlers
  • Duel Masters
  • Cardfight Vanguard

  1. I’ve never been a massive fan of card based anime but the original WIXOSS series was interesting enough and I found I really enjoyed Lostorage. It isn’t without its flaws but it was entertaining enough and I liked the high stakes the players faced. Thanks for sharing.
