“Burst into Bloom… Primrose!”
Gakusen Toshi Asterisk is back, and hit the screens this past Spring with its 2nd season. Following on from the events of the first, it basically continues what was the ending of the Phoenix Festa. The season goes on further to explain more of the background of the characters after this, whereby it did add a bit off depth in understanding towards each characters motives and of course. Amagiri Ayato’s development. The story line however, continues its Academy Battle Arena setting, with some additions towards the darker political power side within society.
With this season’s focus mainly highlighting certain rivalries which may appear in future seasons, it was nice to see how all this played out. Moving from one character to another, from one scene to the next, it was done in a way which flowed well and mixed in within the story line. As said before, this did create a bit more depth into each of the characters, where it has created this so that it can be further expanded upon in future seasons (here’s hoping), a good setup.
The animations this season retained their color from the first, with the use of many different bright colors. It also retained the different special or magical moves each character had, a long with a different variety of attacks and tactics which made the action scenes fun to watch.
Saya Best Girl!
OP/ED: With a fast paced OP to match the speed of academy battles, this being combined with a bunch of great animations made the OP very energetic providing a great start to each episode. The ED on the other hand also maintains the softer tone in comparison to the OP, providing a more soothing end to each episode. It was nice too see the consistency in OP/ED pairings from the 1st season to the next.
Gakusen Toshi Asterisk Season 2 Was it Good?
For a 2nd season, it is a step up from the previous. This can be mainly attuned to the fact that the story has expanded along with the increasing depth between characters. The animation action scenes keep their fluidity and the color usage only strengthens that. For an overall battle academy anime, it’s pretty good.
Recommendations: The recommendations are very similar towards the 1st season, as consistency is the key here, thus I recommend or “re-recommend” the following:
- Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
- Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance
- IS: Infinite Stratos
- Machine Doll wa Kizutsukanai
- Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut
