“This world is a wasteland. Where the innocent will only be devoured. Where one cannot survive only because they do it for their enjoyment.”
Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu takes on a different perspective to that of other “game” based genre anime. Through an amateur team consisting of the shows main characters we are given an exploration through the stages of game creation and how it is affected not just by the industry but the demands of consumers and critics.
The process isn’t perfect, nor it should be as the story is rife with drama from every episode to the next. There was a great focus on the characters and their development, trying to figure out what each person wanted from the project, what their expectations were of not just them self but each other. When they weren’t met the tension in the air increased and seeing this all unfold throughout the season created a lot of depth, as its relatability not just through game creation but just through working with other people was clearly exemplified and done really well.
The best lesson learned from the show, was probably that of learning about ones self as watching our main character one, Houjou Buntarou (Bunta!) develop from someone who didn’t really know, to someone who was focused and knew back to someone who didn’t really know was one of a roller coaster. But this was not done without his fellow friends and seeing their interactions with each other, was quite nice.
Yuuka Best Girl!
OP/ED: The OP provided a good start to the show with a rock based song combined with animations which focused well on the characters. The ED on the other hand provided a more afternoon based tone, though with a lot of energy. The lyrics were probably the main highlight of both of the songs, with the OP relating to the wasteland in which the characters have to strive through in order to achieve their dreams and the ED focusing on jumping into a new world to achieve their dreams with the support of each other.
Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu Was it Good?
For an anime that was released prior to its source (Visual Novel), I questioned it at first. However, as the weeks went on it became a show that was dramatic at heart. With its portrayal of characters and their development, wandering through the wasteland and finding salvation, the show provides a good start to end anime.
Recommendations: With their being not many anime focused on game creation whilst in high school, there are of a variety of different anime with the same levels of drama and character development and thus I recommend the following:
- Saenai Heroine no Sodekata
- Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo
- Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
