OVA’s (Original Animation Video), are basically one off or “episodic” parts to an anime series released in Blu-rays. Like specials they expand on the story whether it be into greater detail of some sections, providing a different perspective or adding on to the end of a series. OVA’s provide to be some of the best one off content seen in anime today, as they are generally a condensed bundle of what the whole season in anime was. With that being said:
Deirii Raifu’s Pick:
Strike the Blood: Valkyria no Oukoku-hen – ‘Empire of the Dawn’
“I, Sword Shaman of the High God and priestess of the Lion, beseech thee. Morning light of exorcism, spirit wolf of snow mist, bestow me the iron might of heaven, so I may smite a hundred evil spirits”
Strike the Blood finally comes back in the form of an OVA. It continues all of the goodness from the series, with tons of fan-service and great characters. As like the series, it was split into two parts or like “2 episodes”. The OVA was a combination of everything that happened over the 2 cour series. With great variety among the different female heroines, it provided for a fun time while watching, with some very cliché moments in their interactions with our protagonist Akatsuki Kojou.
2) Trinity Seven OVA
3) Shinmai Maou no Testament OVA
Special Mentions: High School DxD New: Oppai, Tsutsumimasu!
Suisei no Gargantia: Meguru Kouro, Haruka – ‘Go to Hell’
“I am an interface system that supports and oversees the development of pilots”
The Gargantia OVA’s finished this year, rounding off the gargantia storyline for now. We see what is effectively the epilogue of the original series, allowing us to see how the world has moved on from the events of the series (No Spoilers here! J ). Anyway, it was good to see Production I.G. giving good continuality in the series. If you liked Gargantia, you should probably watch this. The OVA themselves are a fully self-contained story, letting us wonder if we will get that second season (here’s hoping).
