Best Anime of 2015: Mecha

When it comes to mecha the most common thoughts and perceptions are big robots that will either fight each other or some alien life form. This past anime year offered us both, where there was lots of action sprung from both story lines. As mecha are generally used as machines of war, it was nice too see how they varied and also how they were either were a generic (stock) product made for war, or one made for specialized combat. With that being said:

Deirii Raifu’s Pick:

Aldnoah Zero Season 2 – ‘A-Z Looser-Krankheit-Was IS das?’

“What a shame. If you let that endearing side show every day, you’d be sure to get a date.”

2 3

With a variety of different mechs shown throughout the season, whether they be specifically from Mars and suited to space, or from Earth and suited to the ground, Aldnoah Zero takes Mecha of the year. With its different types of battle and use of various terrain, it was nice to see how each mech fared in each situation, whether it be used as the vanguard or just a simple bombing run. The different specialisations of each mech as well as the way physics works and was taken into account, was really intuitive too see and understand.

Aldnoah Zero S2 – ‘Rayleigh Scattering’

“It’s too late for doubts now. There is no returning from this place I have come to”

The second season of Aldnoah Zero pulls no punches when it comes to the true animation of a mecha themed anime. The various levels of technology within the show were profound in value and added towards the tension created via the interplanetary war. This combination of future technology, beautiful animation, high risk situations and appropriately chosen music make Aldnoah Zero Season 2 my best Mecha anime of 2015.
