“Oh, this one has the absolute worst personality! As bad as my own, probably.”
Gakusen Toshi Asterisk focuses on a story about battle entertainment between schools. The story follows Amagiri Ayato in his new school Seidoukan Academy, where he meets a bunch of different characters and companions (mainly female), as he helps them somewhat with their troubles, in order to reach the “Star Wars Festival”.
Set within a futuristic like city, though there are places that can be called slums, it provided for a bright atmosphere towards the whole “Academy City” where students battle in arenas. This was matched well against the darker side of the city (with a main focus on humans, not the city itself), and its ongoing hidden problems or ulterior motives. It was nice too see that the whole landscape not just a human was wearing a mask, in comparison to what it actually watch.
When it came down to the battle sequences, they seemed quite fluid, with a variety of different, “special or “magical” moves it allowed for an easier immersion into each action scene. The scenes were filled with bright colors that contrasted well against the darker ones.
The characters themselves provided a bunch of different personality’s especially with their interactions with Ayato himself. The story unfolds where Ayato, does help each of the characters in one way or another, and of course this added to each characters depth as they revealed more of themselves to him.
Claudia Best Girl!
OP/ED: With its futuristic setting the OP and ED matched well to emphasize those points. The pace between the two songs as well as the animations themselves were done very cleanly, with action scenes in the OP and a character focused ED. With the rock like OP and slow electronic ED it provided the show with some energy before and a more relaxed tone to conclude each episode.
Gakusen Toshi Asterisk Was it Good?
There will be a lot of different comparisons between Gakusen Toshi Asterisk and Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, however Gakusen Toshi is it’s own show whereby its futuristic setting and battle like themes provide for a fun ride. When this is combined with a greater shadow of hidden ulterior motives allowed for more depth in the anime.
With a story focused around students and battling , as well as some deeper darker themes and good character development I recommend the following:
- Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
- Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance
- IS: Infinite Stratos
- Machine Doll wa Kizutsukanai
