“I will destroy the world to save myself.”
Being set in a world where mages are condemned by society, an organization exists in order to fight against their “evil” crimes, the Inquisition. We follow the 35th Test Platoon of the Antimagic Academy, striving to become inquisitors. As well as its main character Kusanagi Takeru, the platoons leader and his goal of “earning money”.
At its heart the story exposes its harem elements through Takeru. He meets a variety of different girls (as well as those originally in his platoon) with different personalities. Though through an orderly sequence of different arcs, we delve deeper into each girls problems whether it be related to their past or what is happening in the present. This sequence allows for each of the characters to be fleshed out, finally moving onto Takeru in the end. The way it was set out allowed for the other genres to be highlighted such as action and comedy, which were done pretty well, in relation to each girl’s interaction with Takeru.
Though being a school based, magic anime, the show wasn’t all bright lights and sweet. A majority of the events that occurred were actually quite dark in a sense due to the conflict between mages and the inquisitors. It was clearly noted that something was going on behind the scenes (especially in relation to Takeru), whether it be some secret organizations plan or a political power struggle, will left too be seen through future seasons. However, with what was given on the plate for this season made it enough to digest and keep the plot/story interesting and sometimes quite mysterious.
When it came down to the little details, they were done correctly. As each sequence was unique it created a nice sense of variety. Every action scene was different, where different strategies had too be used, or even different power ups. It was nice to see that Takeru and his platoon weren’t completely overpowered, where there was an actual struggle to defeat each enemy.
Mari Best Girl!
OP/ED: The OP mainly focused on its characters, mainly the platoon, with slight backgrounds inclined to destroyed buildings or rubble, it was good to see the military and “war” aspect to the show. With a soft electronic pop like tune, it created an easing into the show, which made it quite relaxing to watch. The ED on the other hand had a faster pace, also being electronic. Though without the landscapes, the ED also focused on the characters, creating a strong combination between the two.
Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai Was it Good?
With that being said, in the end it was basically an amalgamation of different genres coming together to create a very solid season of anime. Silver Link did a great job in getting the details right as well as creating a harem, whilst maintaining its “military” background. It was a great combination of seriousness through drama and lightheartedness through character interactions.
Recommendations: For an anime that had 2 different sides, providing a story about 2 different sides, and a combination of different genres that fit together I recommend the following:
- Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
- ToAru Majutsu no Index Series
- ToAru Majutsu no Railgun Series
- Hidan no Aria
