“My real form is transcendental!”
Onsen Yousei Hakone-chan is a short about the hot springs within Japan, whereby each Hot Spring (onsen) has their own spirit, that answer the wishes of those who make them at their shrines.
The story follows Touya and his daily life after summoning the spirit Hakone (1 of the 7 Hakone Hot Spring Spirits). We follow Hakone and Touya as Hakone learns more about the world around her and how has it changed from when she was previously existed.
Many other spirits are introduced throughout season, whereby we see the different interactions between both humans and spirits (whether it be magical tricks, mascots for the area or using their spiritual powers to help those who visit to relax). It was also nice to see the interactions between the different spirits and their take on the age of different onsens where more people would go to the newer onsens thus diminishing the older onsen spirits powers.
Most of the show though is quite lighthearted, in being a short that lasts 3minutes and 30 seconds each week, it is enough time to flesh out all that it is needed. It provides silly comical humor and when combined with the energetic characters with different personalities it provides quite an enjoyment ride to watch.
Haruna Best Girl!
OP/ED: In being a short, there was only an OP.The animations depicted the characters as it introduced them to viewers. This OP embodied what the show was about, with energetic singing, lyrics and instrumental it provided a great start to every episode.
Onsen Yousei Hakone-chan Was it Good?
For a short that provided its laughs as well as keeping things lighthearted, Onsen Yousei Hakone-chan was a good show. It’s one of those anime shorts that probably anyone can watch without having to think very much. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
Recommendations: If you are interested in shorts that are lighthearted and comical this one is for you. Combining this with an interest in Hot Springs would allow for further enjoyment (but isn’t necessary), thus I recommend the following:
- Acchi Kocchi
- Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku
- GJ Bu
- Non Non Biyori
