Owari no Seraph portrays a world where humanity is pushed to the brink of extinction (Where have I heard that before?), via a deadly disease. This gives rise to the vampire race who take control over society using humans as cattle in order to farm blood. However, a portion of society has escaped the hold of vampires and fiddles with human experimentation in order to take back the world against the vampires.
We follow Hyakuya Yuuichirou (or Yuu) as his family gets absolutely destroyed by vampires when trying to escape. He then finds a new family within the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, who use curses in order to fight vampires.
The story focuses around Yuu remembering and letting go of the old bonds he had in order to find a new family and new bonds. Within the overall lying plan of his revenge on the vampires being a driver towards his personality (trying to avoid making new bonds, so he doesn’t lose others), Yuu slowly develops as his experiences catch up to him and he learns that protecting his new family becomes more important than revenge itself.
That saying, it is only the 1st season and there is a 2nd season coming up later this year. It’s interesting to see how the story is further developed. I have read parts of the manga, and some people say the manga is better and feels less rushed than the anime. However, when I think about it, it was good that I read the manga for some extra context to the anime, but it isn’t necessary if you take whats at face value.
Shinoa Best Girl!
OP/ED: I love sawanohiroyuki as a composer, ever since Aldnoah Zero. This time its a different singer in Gemie/Yosh, and the OP/ED I believed was fabulous with the lyrics matching the overall theme that the anime tries to portray. However I did enjoy the OP more than I did the ED, I believe it was probably one of the best this season.
Owari no Seraph Was it Good?
Owari no Seraph does a good job with its characters, the music is quite adamant in its portrayal of scenes, with the background music being more favorable than quirky tunes and insert songs. Owari no Seraph is incomplete and it is difficult to determine whether it will turn out good in the end. Was it good as a season though? In my opinion yes it was, as something that provided action and a shounen-esque vibe to it, I believe Owari no Seraph did its job.
For being within the shounen genre, the bleak outlook on society and humanity rising up to avoid extinction, Owari no Seraph is similar to a lot of anime’s in many different ways. Thus I recommend the following:
- Shingeki no Kyojin (Of course)
- Aldnoah Zero
- Black Bullet
- Tokyo Ghoul
